๐Ÿ“– How DLS Method Works
1
Resource Percentage โ€” Each team has 100% resources (overs ร— wickets in hand). The DLS table assigns a % to each over-wicket combination.
2
Rain Interruption โ€” When overs are lost, the resources lost are calculated from the DLS table for wickets remaining at that point.
3
Target Adjustment โ€” If Team 2 has fewer resources than Team 1, the target is reduced proportionally. If more, it's increased using G50 (average score).
4
Final Target โ€” Team 2's revised target = Team 1's score ร— (Team 2 resources รท Team 1 resources), rounded up by 1.
โ“ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DLS method in cricket? โ–ผ
The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is a mathematical formula used in cricket to calculate a fair target score for the team batting second when weather or other interruptions reduce the overs available. It was developed by Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis and later updated by Steven Stern.
When is the DLS method applied? โ–ผ
DLS is applied in Limited Overs International (LOI) matches โ€” ODIs and T20Is โ€” when rain or bad light interrupts play and overs are lost. It can be applied during Team 1's innings, Team 2's innings, or both.
Is this DLS calculator accurate? โ–ผ
This calculator uses the simplified DLS resource table and provides a very close approximation. Official ICC matches use the full licensed DLS software with exact resource percentages. Results here are for educational and reference purposes.
What is G50 in DLS? โ–ผ
G50 is the average score that a team would be expected to make in a full 50-over innings โ€” typically set at 245 for international matches. It's used when Team 2 ends up with more resources than Team 1 due to rain during the first innings.
How is DLS different in T20 vs ODI? โ–ผ
The same DLS principle applies, but resource percentages differ because T20 innings are 20 overs. The G20 average (average T20 score) is used instead of G50 when needed. Our calculator automatically adjusts based on your selected format.
